What do we do?

What do we do?

Public schools are free in the Dominican Republic, but each child must purchase their own school uniform, sportswear and school supplies. Without these clothes and supplies, a child cannot attend school.
A full school package costs about €100.00. (This is 40% of a modal monthly salary (€250.00) in the Dominican Republic.) For many families, this cannot be afforded, so the children do not attend school.

Do you want to make a difference in a child's life and give him or her the opportunity to pursue education?

Collection

Throughout the year, tourists vacationing in Puerto Plata can leave stuff behind. We do not collect items in, in other countries, because the cost of sending them is very high. These are mainly school supplies, toiletries and medical supplies. School supplies Exercise books, pens, pencils, crayons, sharpeners, eraser, ruler, wasco, glue, craft supplies, etc.
Toiletries Soap, shampoo, deodorant, razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes, tissues,
women's hygiene products etc. Medical devices
Aspirins/paracetamol, cough medicine, nasal spray, band-aids, gauzes, syringes (without needle), incontinence materials, etc. Please note that even in the Dominican Republic medicines cannot be expired.

Covid Food Packages

At the beginning of the Covid period, all tourists were evacuated within 3 weeks from
the island and everyone working in tourism no longer had income. These were not only the people in the hotels, but also think of the cab and bus drivers, airport staff, guides, people making souvenirs, as well as everyone involved in
the food chain from producing and processing the food for the hotels to transporting it there. The impact was huge. No government benefits here, no work is no income. Through the tourists/friends of Elbia Tours, we then raised a huge amount of money to put together basic food packages. With the help of the Rotary Club Puerto Plata, we were then able to bring these to the families who needed it
had. Unfortunately, these were many more families, than we had in packages, but we distributed over 1,000 basic packages in 6 weeks. After this, help from the government began to arrive. Food packages Christmas

DCDR

The Dominican Republic has many stray dogs and cats. DCDR's mission is to significantly improve the health and welfare of its dogs (Coconut Hounds) and cats (Coconut Cats). This mission is accomplished through various programs including spay/neuter, emergency veterinary care, provision of preventive medicine, community involvement and education. Although they come in a variety of shapes, colors and personality types, they are characterized by their very large ears and black muzzle. In addition, they are intelligent, calm and affectionate.
Elbia Tours is offering an excursion to DCDR's project in Luperon. The entire profit of this excursion goes to DCDR.

Ritzen Memorial Center

The Ritzen Memorial Center is located on the grounds of Monkey Jungle in Sosua and is part of the Hadac group. Chuck and Candy Ritzen started giving free
medical care and dental care in Sosua. On Oct. 17, 2016, after Hurricane Matthew, Chuck and Candy flew to Haiti with medical supplies and food to help. On the way back, their small plane crashed in a storm.
Candy's mother now continues the project with a large number of volunteers.
When you book an excursion to Monkey Jungle with Elbia Tours you support the project. Monkey Jungle is also very happy to receive medicine, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and reading glasses.

Christmas Food Packages

Many families cannot afford anything extra during Christmas. Most children receive no presents and are happy to have 3 meals a day. Yet Christmas is 1 of the most important periods in the Dominican Republic.
We would like to do something extra for the families of the children in our school uniform project during Christmas. Getting presents for each child is very difficult and extremely time consuming.
We decided to give the children a food package with basic products on the last day of school. By not having to buy these basic products for that week themselves, they will have money left over for something else. This they can then decide for themselves. One family uses it for clothing, another for a gift, a third for a slightly more luxurious meal, and sometimes it is used for something that has been necessary for some time, but for which they did not have the money.

Manguito School

Between Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada (two areas with multiple All Inclusive hotels and
apartments) lies the little Manguito School. The school of most of the children in our school uniform project. If you sponsor a child from this school and/or have school supplies to donate and are in Puerto Plata, we can see if we can schedule a visit to the school. We always do this in consultation with the head of the school,
because we do not want to disrupt the school program. In the future we would like to provide this school with a paved playground and a separate toilet building. There are now 2 toilets for all students (average 50 to 60) and 4
teachers. The restrooms are now right next to the classrooms, not always ideal in the often high temperatures.

In a drought, the schoolyard is very dusty, and the dust blows into the classrooms (because the
classrooms have no windows) this is not optimal for the children's health. Last year we were able to provide the children with hoops, jump ropes and balls, there was
immediately made grateful use of it.

Future plans

Renovating the Manguito school. Paving the schoolyard and building a new toilet block. (For more info see project Manguito school) The foundation is preparing some new projects. At the moment the support of the children stops when they leave elementary school (usually in the poor neighborhoods this is at the age of 13/14). The new projects are aimed at the children leaving elementary school. We want to offer them hands-on education by arranging some kind of internship spots with local entrepreneurs. The foundation will then pay a fee to the entrepreneur to teach the student the trade. Think of furniture maker, tailor, shoemaker, metalworker, beautician, hairdresser, manicurist and pedicurist. In the Netherlands a lot of furniture is thrown away that can still be restored. We are looking together with some thrift stores if we can ship this furniture to the Dominican Republic to have these pieces restored there and then sell them there. This way, the costs of the internship spots can then be paid for with the proceeds from the sales, so that the project can eventually be self-sufficient
