A full school package costs about €100.00. (This is 40% of a modal monthly salary
(€250.00) in the Dominican Republic). For many families, this is beyond their means, so
children do not go to school.
The children (or the children's parents) do not receive cash. We go to the store with each child (and parent/guardian) ourselves to purchase the school uniform, sports uniform and school supplies, so we can be sure that the money is
is spent where it is intended.
We also collect school supplies that tourists bring with them or buy locally in a kind of 1 dollar shop. This allows us to provide the children with school supplies throughout the year as well if there is a need.

Gear and uniforms
Elvis of Elbia Tours received many questions from tourists about how they could give something back to the country, or what they could bring. Many tourists bring school supplies, toiletries or sponsor a school uniform. A number of children have a regular sponsor over the years. So nice to see how such a child develops. We give these tourists the opportunity, when they are in Puerto Plata, to visit the school and meet the child. This is always done in consultation with the school, because we don't want to disturb the lessons.
